I'm ambitious and plan on moving to America when I leave college. Could someone give me advice on how too?

Hello. My name is Sam and this is my first question on Yahoo! Answers, and it's a serious one, haha. Basically I am 15 years old, live in England, very ambitious and I am planning on what too do when I leave school in 2010, already :)

I have decided on what college to go too, what courses I am taking and will be applying soon next year; that is college sorted!

I am very passionate about acting and would love to become a professional actor in TV, Film and Theatre. I know that it is very difficult to make it big in the showbiz industry and so have a back-up plan of becoming a Drama teacher; still having performing arts involved in the job. Now it is very hard to get far in showbiz in England and so would like to move to America when I leave college, or give it one year after college if possible. I would plan on moving to Los Angeles and attend some sort of Performing Arts University. While attending university, in my spare time would have a part-time job and at the same time attend auditions for films, commericals etc; still getting some sort of income on money and attending university to become a drama teacher.

Now I live in a working class family and so my parents will find it difficult to pay big money to get into uni over in America. They are very supportive of me and what I would like to do in my future but feel it would be best to stay in England. Now I would just like to get some opinions on what is best, if you feel I should go for it could you please give me some information on what steps too take, for example, how to get into America, what university, costs etc. I would be really grateful.

I will be speaking to career advice companys and companys that deal with these kinds of situations anyway but would like to hear from normal people that may have been in this situation or just opinions from anyone really.

Thanks a lot,

The thing about coming to America is that you'll need money. Depending on your Visa you may be able to work part time, you may not be so you cannot count on income while you are here. You would not be able to work part time and get any jobs from auditioning in the industry as that would put you over the 20 hours allowed by imigration. They would not be able to give you the job after filling out tax forms from your Visa.

So start saving money right now. In America we go to school with loans, and they will expect you to do the same, so talk to your parents about co-signing since you will not have any credit. Unlike Europe, America tuition differs much more greatly for us as well as international students. You may pay $2000 a year for tuition or you may pay $55,000 a year, it just depends on where you go, and you have chosen an expensive location in our country.

You can try to transfer, which would save you some money. Go to www.petersons.edu and do a search for schools with a film major, you can pick from different tuition ranges as well. Look on the admissions page on that school's website for international admissions requiremtns. Housing in LA is also really expensive, so you'll want to do student housing, which is still expensive.

If you want to become a drama teacher in America for kids (k-12th grade, so 5 years old to 18 years old) you don't go to a preforming arts school, you would not be able to teach. In America to teach you have to have an education degree, and you would minor in theatre, you can do this anywhere in America and you'll have to teach in the state that you went to school in, or transfer your qualifications, which can be complicated. If you want to teach drama in college then yes, you would go to a preforming arts college, but you would need to get your Master's and your PhD as well. I hope that this healp, if you need anything else just e mail me.
