Moving from China to America...any words of advice?

like shots,

things to pack, for example i hear they dont have deorderant.

any other advice will be greatly appreciated.

oh and i am going to Hunan ProvinceMoving from China to America...any words of advice?
Moving to Hunan will be lots of fun. Are you going there to teach? If you will be there in the summer, know that it can be very very hot!!!!

You should definitely go to the doctor and ask about shots. You should be updated on things like polio, tetanus, etc. and you will probably want to get vaccinated for Hepatitis B, Hepititis A, etc. unless you are just going to be there for a week or two. Go to the dr earlier rather than later because some of the vaccines need more than one shot to be really effective.

Also ignore all those comments about how China sucks. It is a really great place to live in many ways. There is less violent crime on the streets for example, although remember not to get a completely false sense of safety. It is also very easy to get around with buses and taxis, which is a lot of fun. (Although if you are in Changsha, be prepared for some really crowded buses and few open taxis!) There are lots of really cool places to visit, and you can get there with cheap train tickets.

One more word of advice. A lot of people get over there and then think that because they get special treatment as a foreigner, they can do whatever the hell they want, so they ignore the laws. Don't do that. You end up getting in trouble eventually, and getting in trouble in China is no fun. (I have seen it happen with several friends.) Follow and respect the laws of the country you are in. They do apply to you, even though you are an American.

I would definitely bring deodorant with you as there tends to be fewer choices in China and deodorant also tends to be expensive. (If you are a girl, bring tampons, too!) Other toiletries are easy to get in major supermarkets like Carrefour. Avoid getting things like toothpaste at small markets as the ';Crest'; you think you are buying may be a knock-off. Shopping for food at small markets is a lot of fun though.

Keep an open mind!

Bargain hard! Plan to get it for 1/3 the price they are asking or less if its something touristy!

If you are going to be teaching English, you may be asked to start teaching with probably no prep, so do some research on the web and then come up with own style.

Have fun! I am so jealous, I wish I could go with you!Moving from China to America...any words of advice?
Shoes with good arch support can be hard to find. Also, if you have over a size 7.5 womens size, you can have trouble finding shoes, period. Large clothing sizes can be difficult to find as well.

While deodorant can be found in some places in Beijing, it's not very common. Bring your own.

Don't worry about toothpaste. Crest/Colgate as well as other brands are easily found. However, if you have a favorite kind of toothbrush, I'd bring along a few.

No worries about other toiletry items. It's all there. However, if you wear powder or any kind of foundation and have a medium to dark skin tone, it will be difficult to find makeup dark enough. You'll need to bring your own for that. However, eye shadows, mascaras, lip gloss, lipstick, etc. are all available in almost every color imaginable.

Household items are easy to find, although sometimes, it's hard to find a teflon spatula (depends upon your city). If you don't do much cooking, or don't have great cookware, then this isn't a big deal.

While the internet has great recipes, sometimes it's nice to actually look in a cookbook. If you have a favorite cookbook, then bring it along.

Emotional items such as family photos are obviously a must.

Bedding and the like is easy to find.

If you are not an unusual size, then don't bring a winter coat . . . just buy it in China. This will save you a lot of space. Same thing with basic winter clothing . . . bring enough to get you through the first cold snap, but get the rest here.

Favorite books or specialty books you may use in your work are always easier to bring than to buy.

A good travel guide, although the internet is helpful.

Mandarin phrase book (Berlitz has a pretty comprehensive ';travel'; Mandarin book) to get you through the first few weeks/months. Hopefully, your job will allow you to take classes or hopefully, you will have enough time to get a tutor. Knowing the language will make your experience much more enjoyable.

A first aid kit consisting of Pepto Bismol, ibuprofin/aspirin, triple antibiotic ointment, bandaids, anti-diarrhea meds, tums and the like. Make sure your bandaid pack (although, bandaids are easier to find now) has all sizes, ranging from knuckle bandages to large elbow patches. You never know when you or someone else may need them.

Any vitamins you are used to taking.

That's all I can think of for now. I'll add on if I think of anything else.

Good luck!
You meant: Moving from America to China

Also, China is a corrupt, brutal country who don't respect human rights, animal rights, or anything for that matter. Japan is much more civilized and Thailand is much more free. The best advice I can give you is stand up for whats right and change your plane ticket.

p.s., they do have deodorant. Shots are if you are going to the jungle. You don't get shots to go to a province. They arent animals and you wont be sleeping in bushes.

edit:
