xxMoving to America,Michigan.Any advice??:D?
Dearborn Heights is a middle class suburb of Detroit, and is typically suburban (so it might as well be anywhere I the US)

Schools are fairly good in Dearborn Heights, but you have to make them work for you (take the advance classes). Private schools are always better.

Michigan has a racial tension streak; this is very strong in Detroit area. (I love how you Irish are always like “Americans are so racist” easy to say when Ireland has been homogenously white for all of its history).

The weather can get cold in winter and yes it snows try to get a trip to the Upper Peninsula it really snows.

Honesty right now Michigan has been an economic nightmare for some time, the sprawl of Detroit has been massive and is now covering more than three counties (as whites try to move away from blacks and immigrants). Being THE manufacturing state “free trade” has been a disaster as factories have moved overseas or closed by the thousands resulted in hundreds of thousands of job losses and a major wage decrees in remaining jobs.

Michigan’s unemployment is the highest in the US standing at 11.6% and Michigan is perhaps the only state losing population.

The loss of manufacturing base has resulted in EPIC and absolute urban decay as cities like Detroit (proper), Flint, Saginaw, and Benton Harbor. These cities are “ghettos” and have severe crime rates.

Other cities such as Jackson, Bay City, Battle Creek, Muskegon, Port Huron and Kalamazoo are also showing signs of bad decay but are not as of yet a total loss

Holland, Lansing and Grand Rapids are so far escaping a lot of the states woes, as are Ann Arbor (trust fund hippies) and Traverse City (yuppie magnet).

Rural areas are taking it on the chin with the lose of manufacturing jobs “post industrial rural poverty” is a very real, however once you get north of Muskegon, rural becomes wilderness, and the Upper Peninsula is very beautiful and rugged.

Michiganders are very friendly enough especially if you leave that strong sense of personal superiority that many people in Europe, Ireland, and the Britain have at home.

Michigan does have excellent universities and colleges.

FINAL REVIEW Michigan sucks, dreadful largest metropolitan region, severe urban and rural decay, crime, decaying infrastructure, over “generous” welfare, unemployment, high taxes I could go on forever. No wonder most people graduating from universities plan to leave the state.Moving to America,Michigan.Any advice??:D?
There's going to be racial tension any where you go, so that's one thing you always have to deal with. However racial tension seems to be at its worst in areas like Kalamazoo, Muskegon and, Grand Rapids. As far as the people in general, most Michiganders are freindly type of people (especially in the U.P. and, the eastern portion of the the State).

College and, University wise; Michigan is a class A State. U of M, Michigan state, Centeral Michigan and, Michigan Tech are all world class Universities that offer exellent education and, world class athletic programs.

Michigan cities such as Grand Rapids, Lansing, Detroit and, several places further north all offer a veriety of things to do family and, adult night life wise. It's best to avoid places such as Kalamazoo, Battle Creek and, Muskegon considering they're all bland and, offer very little for the younger crowds.

The economy in Michigan is at an all time low right now, so don't expect to find a job right away, you'll have to be patient.
Wow, what an exciting and anxious time for you! I can't imagine what it's like to be 14 and faced with the possibility of moving to another country, so I'll try to provide you with as much info as possible.

First of all, Michigan is a beautiful state with four distinct seasons. Yes, it's cold in the winter and it's hot and humid in the summer. Michigan is blessed with lots of natural beauty...lakes, rivers, waterfalls, forests, wide open fields, etc.

As far as schools, I am an educator who has worked in many different school buildings throughout SE MI. It really depends on which school you go to. So districts are really small and some are really big. Some are really strong academically and some are not. I don't mean to bash the Detroit Public School system, but I would NEVER send my own children there. It really depends on where you're moving to, though, because Michigan is a big state with LOTS of school districts.

Finally, I think the people in Michigan are some of the friendliest, hard-working, caring people in the US. Our state is very diverse. Some parts of the state have a lot of people with Polish descent, some parts of the state have a lot of people with Arabic descent, some parts of the state have a large hispanic population, some parts of the state have a large African-American population, some parts of the state are predominately white. Are some people here racist? Yes, but you'll find racist people no matter where you live.

I hope I've helped. Take care!
Americans are @ssholes by nature, good luck!
